Law Professor Named as Candidate for Supreme Court Justice

Seoul National University law professor Yang Chang-su has been recommended for the Supreme Court.

Once officially nominated, Yang will be the first legal scholar named to the country’s highest court, and the first from Jeju Island.

The Supreme Court said, “Chief Justice Lee (Yong-hoon) recommended professor Yang to President Lee yesterday to succeed resigning Justice Kim (Hwang-shik, who has been appointed head of the Board of Audit and Inspection).”

Once President Lee accepts the recommendation and nominates Yang, the professor will take office after a confirmation hearing. No president has rejected a recommendation from the chief justice on a new member.

Yang started his career as judge in charge of civil litigation in November 1979. In 1985, he joined Seoul National University as a law professor, and has been studying and lecturing on civil law for almost 20 years.

Yang is considered one of the country’s top authorities on civil law.
