Experiencing a Day in the Life of Students with Disabilities

To provide an opportunity to better acknowledge the difficulties and capabilities of the disabled, Seoul National University hosted events on Monday, April 21st, in commemoration of Persons with Disabilities Day.

Throughout the day, SNU students and staff participated in events designed to promote understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities. Going up and down the stairs blind with the help of a guide dog, making labels in the Braille system (embossed typing) and moving around in a wheelchair, members of the SNU community could try and feel what it is like to lead the life of a student with a disability.

At the Disabled Students Support Center, assistive technology was introduced and the award-winning movie illustrating life after suffering a massive stroke, ‘The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’, was shown. A photo exhibition was held in front of the Student Center with photos picturing the daily life of students with disabilities at SNU and about disability issues in general.

Through these events, SNU aims to encourage collaborative efforts among its community members. SNU was the first national university in Korea to open a support center for students with disabilities, and SNU continues to make every effort to enhance and support the academic and social life of disabled students on campus.
