‘2008 Artificial Intelligence Robot School’

‘2008 Artificial Intelligence Robot School’ winter workshop to be opened

The School of Computer Science and Engineering of SNU is co hosting with Bonavision, a specialized company for intelligent robots, an ‘Artificial Intelligence Robot School’ winter workshop (Wed 9th Jan ~ Fri 18th Jan) for students of middle school through to university at the new Engineering Building (Buildingg 301 Room 316).

The workshop is held in order to foster leaders who will initiate the development of robots with artificial intelligence which will play a revolutionary role in the future society. This one is the second workshop hosted by the School of Computer Science and Engineering (Dean: Prof. Hyungju Kim) after the first held in August 2007.

This winter workshop consists of two groups: Basic Class (1.9-11) for middle and high school students and Advanced Class (1.16-18) for high school and university students. Both will go on from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will have the opportunity to actually program intelligent robots and design one’s own ‘Robot project’ to develop a robot with artificial intelligence. A competition of these self-designed robots will be held on the last day of each class (11th and 18th Jan, 2008).

Hongsik Shin (Representative director of BonaVision), a specialist in the field of Robots with Artificial Intelligence, emphasized that, according to futurologists, robots with artificial intelligence which exceeds the intelligence of humans will appear at around 2025, and therefore implanting hope and interest in teenagers about the core science field through various activities. Especially, activity that involves direct interaction with intelligent robots is one of the best ways to mold future leaders who will revolutionize the 21st century science, said Shin.

Currently, many advanced countries like USA, Japan, and those in Europe are hosting global robot competitions such as RoboGames and FIRST Robotics Competition, where tens of thousands of teenagers take part every year, to compete, improve and share their engineering skills as well as knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence and are actually accomplishing astonishing leaps.
