Seoul National University has been ranked 63rd in the annual ranking of top 200 universities, The World University Ranking 2006 by The Times Higher Education Supplement. It was placed 11th among 33 Asian universities on the table.

SNU received high scores on the ‘qualitative’ surveys rather than ‘quantitative’ ones. SNU was ranked 44th for the peer review which is the most important criteria in The World University Ranking.

Editor of The Times Higher Education Supplement, Martin Ince said that Seoul National University might have been expected to suffer in our rankings from highly visible misdeeds in its stem-cell research program, but in fact, SNU rose 30 places, from 93 to 63, between 2005 and 2006.

Receiving the news, SNU Associate Dean Nam said, “The Times Higher Ranking shows that all the effort SNU has made to internationalize itself was successful.”

SNU is Korea’s only entrant of top 100, followed by Korea University ranked 150th.

The criteria used for this year's rankings include research quality (peer review by 3,703 academics who were asked to identify up to 30 universities best for research within their own field of expertise, and citations per faculty); teaching quality; graduate employability (recruiter review by 736 employers world-wide); and international outlook (international-to-total faculty and international students-to-total students ratios).
