Alumnus Ban Appointed U.N.Secretary-General

The United Nations General Assembly officially chose Ban Ki-Moon as its eighth new secretary-general, replacing Kofi Annan. Ban, who was the only candidate for the top UN job, will have a two-and-a-half-month transition period before taking office on Jan. 1.

Ban met with members of the Nonaligned Movement and the Group of 77, the two major organizations representing developing countries, at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday. At the meeting, Ban expressed concern over conflict and strife between UN members and pledged to strengthen the world’s body’s mediating role to overcome it. He also vowed to reform the UN Secretariat.
