Seoul National University Celebrates 60th Birthday

Seoul National University marks its 60th anniversary on Sunday. The university has produced leaders of Korea’s political, social, economic, cultural, science and art worlds since it opened in 1946 and ranks among the world’s top 60 universities. As Korea’s best university, SNU faces high expectations but also calls for change from inside and outside.
SNU has grown in size and quality over the last 60 years and has recently received outstanding international recognition. It came 63rd in this year’s Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) QS World University Rankings, a surge from 93rd in 2005. Its engineering college was listed among the world’s top 10 or 20 colleges by globally renowned academics this year, based on faculty research performance, the number of masters and doctoral degrees, the quality of educational facilities and research productivity.
The world’s top academics put SNU’s Natural Science College on the list of the world’s top 40 colleges last year. In the assessment, one panel member said he did not realize that the globally little known college had such a high educational and research level.
Increasing numbers of theses written by SNU researchers are carried in the Science Citation Index. In terms of the number of theses cited in the index, SNU ranked 30th in 2005, shooting up from 94th in 1998. Each SNU professor produced 10.8 articles on average in 2005, about 10 times more than the 1.24 in 1966.
