SNU Academic Policies and Procedures against COVID-19 Infection

❒ Background
  • In response to the recent spread of COVID-19, universities must ensure the timely actions for stabilizing the academic operations with reference to Academic Operation Guidelines against COVID-19 Infection, published by Ministry of Education;
  • In accordance with the changes in academic calendar, changes in academic policies and procedures must also be immediately addressed to protect the student rights to study free of concern.

  • Academic Policies for COVID-19-affected Students
    • -Suggested criteria is as follows:

      ※ More details are suggested in SNU Division of Educational Affairs’s notice on guidance for preventing infections, and may change when the government put additional regulations in place.
    • - Students affected by COVID-19 must not enter the campus and attend any class for the legitimate period. Class absences of these students will be acknowledged for attendance with proof documentation*.
    • -Each institution that offers courses will be notified of the list of the affected students (confirmed and suspected patients, self-quarantine, and self-isolated cases), including their quarantine period and course registration information, by SNU Division of Educational Affairs (through SNU Health Service Center or Office of International Affairs).
    • -Any student who has suspected symptoms can also excuse their class absences with proof documentation* under the approval of the institution or instructor that offers the course.
      * Proof documentation includes medical certificates, documents that certifies on the date of entry, etc., which must be submitted to the instructor of that course.
  • Changes in Class Planning and Operations
    • -Undergraduate and graduate programs share the same academic calendar.
    • -Due to the shortening of semester (from 15 weeks to 14 weeks), classes will be held as follows:
      · 15 hours per credit workload requirement must be completed within 14 weeks.
      * In accordance with Article 74 of 「Seoul National University School Regulations」, 1 credit must carry 15 hours or more of classes. (30 hours or more of classes for courses classified as lab sessions, practices, and physical education.)
      · The new syllabus that includes the schedule changes, such as extra make-up classes, can be found on the course registration website from March 2, 2020.
    • -Course change period is from Monday, March 9 to Friday, March 20, 2020.

If you have traveled to China and other infected regions and have a fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, shortening of breath, etc.), you must go to state-designated medical facilities or call the KCDC call center (1339), Dasan Seoul Call Center (Area code+120), or local community health center to follow the necessary procedures.

Confirmed Patients Those who have been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 through the diagnostic test (regardless of whether to have symptoms or not)
· Diagnostic test: PCR

Suspected Patients Those who have visited China in the past 14 days AND experience a fever (37.5℃) or respiratory symptoms (fever, sore throat, etc.)
Those who have been in close contact with confirmed case in the past 14 days AND experience a fever (37.5℃) or respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, etc.)
Those suspected with COVID-19 Infection by a doctor AND experience a fever (37.5℃) or respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, pneumonia, etc.) within 14 days after returning from traveling to COVID-19-infected regions
Self-Quarantine
(under active surveillance)
Those who have visited Hubei province in the past 14 days (including transits; entering Korea on February 4 onwards) or those who have been in contact with confirmed case AND show no symptom;
To be in self-quarantine for 14 days under monitoring of local public health divisions.
Self-Isolated Those who have visited China, Hong Kong, and Macau in the past 14 days AND show no symptom;
To be suspended from entering the campus (excluded from class and work) and prevented from having in contact with people and going outside from the current residence
* Those who develop any suspected symptoms must call the local community health center or 1339 KCDC call center.

On-Campus Guidance for Preventing COVID-19 Infection
  • -Wear a mask if you have any respiratory symptoms, such as coughs, especially when you go outside or visit any health/medical facilities.
  • -Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 30 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • -Cover your cough or sneeze into your upper sleeves when you do not wear a mask.
  • -Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • -Inform your overseas travel history to medical staff.
