SNU and the University of Pennsylvania reached an academic exchange agreement on May 23. OH Yeon Cheon and Amy Goodman, respective presidents of the two universities, exchanged the hard copies of the agreement and agreed ‘to conduct collective researches reaching beyond national borders.’ The main subjects of the academic exchange will be Dentistry, Korean Studies and basic studies.

SNU Central Library announced that it will refrain from buying books on test taking know-hows and worldly wisdom. Instead, books related to academic research will be number one priority when buying new books according to the library’s new guideline. This is due to fiscal limitations on this year’s library budget, which has been reduced by 20% compared to that of last year.

A research conducted by the SNU Bundang Hospital has found that using nature friendly construction materials can alleviate the severity of atopic dermatitis, a skin disease which occurs in approximately 10% of South Korean children. The research has been conducted since May 2010, in cooperation with the Korean Land and Housing Corporation.

SNU College of Law Alumni Association has announced this year’s recipients of the ‘Honorable SNU College of Law Alumni Award.’ This year’s recipients include a former Prime Minister, a former Minister of Justice and an honorary professor of SNU. The awards ceremony will be held on May 25, at the SNU College of Law Alumni Association’s regular meeting.

SNU ranked fifth place in the academic peer review done by 15,630 scholars worldwide regarding universities in Asia. Tokyo University, the National University of Singapore, Kyoto University, and Beijing University ranked from 1st place to 4th place. This year, 8 other Korean universities ranked within the top 50 universities, compared to last year’s 5. SNU had ranked fifth place in last year’s survey as well.

PARK Choong Mo, an SNU Professor of the Department of Chemistry and his research team recently found out the factors which influence the bio-rhythm of plants. Certain genes inside plants were discovered to be re-combinating themselves. The result of this research may be applicable in growing plants which adapt better to harsh environmental circumstances. Professor PARK’s work will be published in the May volume of Nature Communication.
