Interview with Professor LEE Sin-Doo

Professor Lee Sin-Doo (School of Electrical Engineering), who recently received the 59th Korea National Academy of Sciences Award, had an interview with HanKook Economic Daily. Professor Lee worked for Bell Labs from 1988 to 1992 where he first researched OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) and then switched to LCDs. Professor Lee being a devout Catholic, he moved back to Korea when a Catholic priest urged him to contribute to Korea’s development. In 1995, he presented first generation 9.4 inch laptops, and in 1998, standardized the third generation 12.1 inch laptop, moving ahead of Japanese competitors. Afterwards he developed basic technology for television and desktop monitors, supporting industry companies such as Samsung. A visiting professor at Sichuan University, he warned that “China is granting enormous benefits to bring back talented scientists. Our government needs a detailed plan.”
