Interview with Professor PAIK Jin-Hyun

Professor Paik Jin-Hyun (Graduate School of International Studies) was reelected for a second term of office as a presiding judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Based on the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, ITLOS adjudicates problems related to fishing rights, maritime environment protection and EEZ delineation. It also gives advisory opinions. ITLOS sits at Hamburg, Germany and its judges are elected from renowned scholars and lawyers who are familiar with international law or diplomats. Professor Paik stressed that the functions of ITLOS are directly linked to the national interests of South Korea as a peninsular country. “During the last five years many Chinese legal officers were elected at international tribunals. We need to raise specialists in international law and maritime law,” he said.
