SNU Receives National Energy Globe Award for the Republic of Korea 2014

SNU and Seoul Metropolitan Government’s joint efforts on the green roof project received the Energy Globe Awards’ National Award for the Republic of Korea 2014. SNU created 826 square meters of ‘green roof’ on Building No. 35, planting grass, flowers, shrubbery, and vegetables. These gardens reduced the risk of flooding by absorbing rain, as was proved last year when they stored up to 3 hours of rain, thereby delaying flooding. The green roof also increased the energy efficiency of the building and reduced the heat-island effect. When measured at noon, the green roof was 26.1 degrees Celsius, whereas a concrete roof was 53.8 degrees. The award ceremony was held at Seoul City Hall where Elisabeth Bertagnoli, the Austrian ambassador to South Korea, gave out the award on behalf of the Energy Globe Foundation.
