SNU Professor Develops Next Generation Lithium Secondary Cell Battery

Professor KANG Kisuk of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has developed original technology for the production of next generation lithium secondary cell batteries along with KAIST and the Agency for Defense Development. Lithium secondary cell batteries have until now not been possible to produce in high volumes as they cause environmental harm upon production as well as their recycling. In response to this, the research team used organic material to create nanostructures to produce green energy lithium secondary battery cells. “Instead of using heavy, poisonous transition metal, body-derived organic material can be used to store up high levels of energy very fast,” said Professor Kang. “In the future I expect we can make ‘bio batteries’ -- batteries with electrodes made entirely of organic material.” This development was published in the April 23 edition of Advanced Materials.
