Possible New Cure for Alzheimer’s

[RESEARCH] The research team led by Professor JUNG Yong Keun of SNU’s Department of Biological Sciences identified the protein that participates in the induction of Alzheimer’s disease and the working mechanism of the protein. Restraining or eliminating the function of the protein might be helpful for curing dementia. Alzheimer’s has been known to occur when the nephrotoxic chemical ‘amyloid-β (Aβ)’protein accumulates excessively in the brain. However, the destructive mechanism of Aβ on neurons has been unknown. The research team noticed that the brains of Alzheimer’s patients contain conspicuously abundant ‘FC-y receptor IIB (FcyRIIb)’ protein. The research team found that the isolation of Aβ and FcyRIIb suggests a new way to cure dementia. The result of this research was published in the online version of the Journal of Clinical Investigation on June 10.
