1954 - 1960 Reconstruction

  • As of 1954 The extent of damages caused by the Korean War:
    - Among 458 of all SNU buildings, 276 needed reconstruction
    - 21 of the College of Engineering's buildings burnt down
    - The College of Agriculture lost 38% of its campus
  • Mar. 15, 1954 Entrance examination held

  • Sept. 1954 - Sept. 1961 Minnesota Project
    Minnesota Project for reconstruction and development of Seoul National University
    - 1954-1958 1st Minnesota Project (signed on Sept. 28, 1954)
    - 1958-1961 2nd Minnesota Project (extended)
    The US government and the University of Minnesota launched the Minnesota Project to provide financial support for reconstruction and development of Korean higher education. Financial aid given: 5,451,000 USD for the 1st Project, and 4,343,000 USD for the 2nd Project
    Education aid given: 218 professors sent to universities in the US -- 15 received doctoral degrees, and 71 master's degrees
  • Feb. 18, 1955 Unified emblem of the university created
  • Apr. 9, 1955 The SNU Senate was established with 22 senates (17 internal members and 5 external members), and continued until 1959
  • Apr. 6, 1956 Professor HYUN Sin Kyu, who had been sent to the UC Berkeley as part of Minnesota Project, returned and founded SNU Institute of Forest Genetics
  • July 14, 1956 Department of Sericulture established in the College of Agriculture
  • Oct. 20, 1956 The Alumni Association donated the Bell of Justice to the Dongsung-dong campus, commemorating SNU's 10th anniversary
  • 1956 - 1958 Students actively organized political study groups on campus, which later played a major role in raising the April 19th Revolution in 1960: Shinjin-heoi (1956), Shinjo-heoi (1956), Study Group for Agricultural Society (1958), Gyeonguh-heoi (mid 1950s), Study Group for Developing Society (1958), Social Law Study Group (1958), and Study Group for Social Problems of Developing Society (1960)
  • Mar. 7, 1957 Many national comprehensive universities were established in early 1950s, which caused serious financial problems for the government. The Ministry of Education ordered each national university to organize ‘School Supporting Association (Giseonghheoi)' to collect additional fees besides tuition. SNU collected 960 million KRW Giseonghheoi fees from 1957-1961
  • Mar. - Apr. 1957 Students went on unified strike, opposing the government's decision to transfer RHEE Kang-Seok, Korean President's foster son, to SNU's College of Law
  • Jan. 12, 1958 Aids from the Minnesota Project first arrived
  • Dec. 31, 1958 Following the medical education system in the US, the postgraduate medical education system was established at SNU Hospitals with one year internship and four years of residency, which is still in existence today.
  • Jan. 13, 1959 10 departments were created with an admission quota of 1,440 added
