The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was the first world university ranking compiled by the Higher Education Research Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The ARWU list has been compiled and announced annually since 2003.

Universities were assessed and ranked based mainly on e-mail reviews from professors and corporations.

Taiwan has published ranking since 2007 by analyzing SCI paper publications and citations of world universities. The Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council conducted this ranking from 2007 to 2011, and the National Taiwan University took over from 2012.

Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University in Turkey is conducting the largest size world university rankings as evaluating research performance of 2,500 universities worldwide. They use open-access data such as ISI (Information Sciences Institute) and Google Scholar.
