Dr. J Michale Bishop, Chancellor Emeritus of the University of California at San Francisco(UCSF), serves as a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the GW Hooper Foundation. Dr. Bishop joined the UCSF faculty in 1968 and was appointed as UCSF chancellor in February 1998. Since 2004, he also has held the Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professorship. While serving as chancellor, Dr. Bishop continued to teach medical students and run his distinguished research lab. Dr. Bishop and his collegue Harold Varmus shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1989 for their discovery of the first proto-oncogene, c-src. Dr. Bishop and Dr. Glenn Seaborg, who served as chacellor at UC Berkeley from 1958-61, are the only two Nobel laureates to have served as chancellors in the 10-campus UC system. Dr. Bisop’s research team has investigated the genetic underpinnings of cancer, in particular the large group of celluar genes known as proto-oncogenes.
